Hiking
You might not believe us, but Great Sand Dunes National Park is a great destination for hiking! Avid hikers can scale the massive dunes like High Dune on First Ridge or Hidden Dune. Once you reach the top, you can look out across the valley! If you’re hoping for something more mountainous, you’re still in luck! Hikers can enjoy the Montville Nature Trail or the Mosca Pass Trail to experience the nearby evergreen forests. Don’t forget to include Zapata Falls on your list of hikes.
The Scenery & Wildlife
We’ve already mentioned the gorgeous scenery, but there’s even more we want to talk about! Not only does SLV have amazing views, but it’s also home to incredible wildlife! Take a quick trip over to the Alamosa National Wildlife Refuge to view thousands of migratory birds and other local wildlife!
Visitors can also explore Blanca Vista park for picnic areas, trails, beautiful views, and lots of wildlife! Oh and did we mention the dog park for your furry family member, too?

If you’re planning on staying in SLV, don’t miss out on local Alamosa events! You can wander through downtown Alamosa, but we highly recommend this on the first Friday of every month so you can catch: First Fridays! On the first Friday of each month, our incredible community comes together to celebrate and enjoy our local superstars: everything from small business owners to musicians to creators! The whole family can explore downtown while indulging in great food and great company!
