Previously one of the largest iron ore-producing mines in Colorado, the Orient Mine is full of history... not to mention many other surprises! Today the mine is home to over 250,000 migratory bats and the area is designated by the Colorado Division of Wildlife as a Natural Area. Although the mine itself is closed due to wildlife conservation efforts, the outside area is frequented by wildlife enthusiasts who are interested in getting a peak at the large bat gathering that calls the mine home. The approach to the mine starts at the Black Canyon Trailhead.
